Did I go to Smart Mouth College? Do I hang out at Sin Saloon?

There is one place I don’t want to go. I definitely don’t want to graduate from Smart-Mouth College. I don’t want God to give me a Masters or Ph.D. from there. No way. Other places I don’t want to be found? Sin Saloon and Dead-End Road.

Nope, I want to be excited about God’s word. I want to think on it, chew on it, all the time. Spending time with His word is what pleases Him.

How well God must like you—
you don’t hang out at Sin Saloon,
you don’t slink along Dead-End Road,
you don’t go to Smart-Mouth College.

Instead you thrill to God’s Word,
you chew on Scripture day and night. Psalm 1:1-3

“Give me a bent for your words of wisdom, and not for piling up loot.” ~~King David

King David knew what was important. His passion was for God’s word. Nothing delighted him more that to hear what God had to say. He devoted himself to listening. He didn’t care about wealth, just obeying God.

May I long for what God is saying today.

“It takes more than a great meal to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.” ~~Jesus

We think there are so many things we need. And need, is how we frame it. We can’t imagine not having that nice new car. We must have it. The new flat screen HD TV. Got to have it. The nice meal out. Must do it soon.

Jesus challenges us to see our life in God’s world as the essense of what God is saying to us right now. That is the only thing that is important. Nothing else is. All else is an idol compared to our living God.

We must see our life as Jesus challenges us. We must change our minds about what is important. We can live a life that is focused on that steady stream of God’s words that He gives us every moment of every day.

“It takes more than a great meal to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.” ~~Jesus (Matthew 4:4 The Message)

Whose words am I speaking?

September 15, 2012 1 comment

Jesus didn’t say what He wanted to. His words were from my Heavenly Father. The origin of what He said was focused on what He saw His Father doing, what His Father was saying and who His Father is.  This is an amazing way Jesus lived before His death, resurrection and ascension to power.

How often are my words my own versus words from my Heavenly Father?

May my words reflect what my Heavenly Father who is living in me is doing.

The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. John 14:10

“Some of the seed fell on the road; it was tramped down and the birds ate it.” ~~Jesus

Jesus knows that God’s word isn’t always received well.   The seeds on the road are those who hear the Word of God, but no sooner do they hear it than the Devil snatches it from them so they won’t believe and be saved. It is hard to understand all of this. The Disciples struggled as well.

We don’t have to understand how or even why the Devil snatches up God’s Word but we know, from Jesus, it happens. We have to be careful. This message is for us not someone else. Jesus said this to His disciples. He said it to give us insight. We need to take care with God’s word.

We are challenged by Jesus to have good-hearts. He wants us to seize the Word. We need to hold on no matter what, sticking with it until there’s a harvest. That is how it is in God’s world (Kingdom).

“A farmer went out to sow his seed.” ~~Jesus

Jesus challenges us to understand GOD’s word. GOD is the farmer. It is GOD who plants the seed, His word.

This has nothing to do with us. It is all GOD’s doing. We like think we are the center of things. Even the disciples of Jesus didn’t get what Jesus was saying and they were with Him all day long for 3 years. It all starts with GOD and His word. That is the most important thing to understand. It is all about GOD and what He says / wants.

“Trivialize even the smallest item in God’s Word and you will only have trivialized yourself.” ~~Jesus

God means what He says. What He says is important. What He says is not to be trivialized in any way. When we do, we trivialize ourselves, not Him. His word will always be true.

Jesus demands that we understand that. It is important.

“God’s Law is more real and lasting than the stars in the sky and the ground at your feet.” ~~Jesus

Jesus is clear on what God has said. His word is like Him. It is here to stay. Nothing can be added to it or taken away from it. He means what He says. We can count on Him.

Now that is some good news.

A lamp

Almighty, eternal and merciful God, whose Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, open and illuminate our minds, that we may purely and perfectly understand your Word and that our lives may be conformed to what we have rightly understood, that in nothing we may be displeasing unto your majesty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. – the daily morning prayer of Ulrich Zwingli, from Gregg Alison’s "Introduction to Historical Theology"
