Is my goal popularity?

August 13, 2012 8 comments

Is my goal popularity? The Apostle Paul was clear that wasn’t his goal. He knew what his goal was. His focus would lead him to do many unpopular things. There is a danger in caring what others think of us.

Much of our culture seems to focused on measuring popularity. How many friends do I have on Facebook or Twitter? What is my Klout score? Do friends “like” what I post?

Paul knows we should be focused. He knows we should be totally devoted to following Jesus, no matter what. That definitely won’t make us popular. We need to know that and be prepared for it. We should anticipate it with joy. There is nothing to compare with being in love with Him. This has nothing to do with human optimism.

“If my goal was popularity, I wouldn’t bother being the Messiah’s slave.” ~~Apostle Paul (Galatians 1:10 The Message)

Can I do a deep dive?

A lot of people are just flitting around the surface. I can be one of them. The Holy Spirit of God is not superficial. He is not content like we can be.Dove of the Holy Spirit (ca. 1660, alabaster, ...

Imagine knowing the depths of God? No seriously, imagine that!!

How can I know that God’s plan is for me? Well, I can do a deep dive into God. When I am filled with His Spirit, He brings what God has planned.

The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along. ~~Paul (1 Corinthians 2:10)

How clear can I see?

1 Corinthians 13

1 Corinthians 13 (Photo credit: Daniel Y. Go)

Some days it is like trying to see in the fog. I just dont see things clearly. There is a heavy mist out. I am trying to see but it is just blurry no matter what I  do. When I see Him face to face it is all clear. He clears up everything. He fully knows me and everything. It is His knowledge that I seek.

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12

Why blame me?

January 22, 2012 Leave a comment

Why blame me? Great question. We aren’t doing God any favors by continuing to miss the mark when it comes to His plan. It doesn’t give God any glory to not walk in the good news of His plan and continue to fall short of His goal for us.

God wants us to follow His way. It is that simple.

It’s simply perverse to say, “If my lies serve to show off God’s truth all the more gloriously, why blame me? I’m doing God a favor.” Some people are actually trying to put such words in our mouths, claiming that we go around saying, “The more evil we do, the more good God does, so let’s just do it!” That’s pure slander, as I’m sure you’ll agree. Romans 3:7-8

“And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment.” ~~ Apostle Paul

God has chosen us for a new life. It is a life of love. It’s characteristics are:

  • Compassion
  • Kindness
  • Humility
  • Quiet strength
  • Discipline
  • Even tempered
  • Forgiving

And so, we should wear love everyday. It is a garment we should always put on.

So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it. Colossians 3:12-14

God has pursued us

O Living Flame of Love . . . How gently and how lovingly Thou wakest in my bosom, where alone thou secretly dwellest; And in Thy sweet breathing full of grace and glory how tenderly Thou fillest me with Thy love.

These words, penned by St. John of the Cross in his book Living Flame of Love, capture the heart-cry of every soul for intimacy with God. For this we were created and for this we were rescued from sin and death. In Ephesians, Paul lets us in on a little secret: We’ve been more than noticed. God has pursued us from farther than space and longer ago than time. God has had us in mind since before the Foundations of the World. He loved us before the beginning of time, has come for us, and now calls us to journey toward him, with him, for the consummation of our love.

Love well

I know I tend to think that either I love or I don’t. Paul points out that there is another way to see it.

We can love and we can have a lot of love. But beyond that we should love well. There should be a quality to our love. Love is not about quantity but it is all about quality. How well do I love? Something to think, pray and act on.

So I pray, may I love well!!

“So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well.” ~~ Apostle Paul
