“Whoever makes deals with strangers is sure to get burned; if you keep a cool head, you’ll avoid rash bargains.” ~~King Solomon

Now here is some good advice. Before doing business, we ought to take some time to get to know the people behind the deal. Who are they? What do they value?

It is not all about the deal.

“Whoever makes deals with strangers is sure to get burned; if you keep a cool head, you’ll avoid rash bargains.” ~~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:15)

“The loose tongue of the godless spreads destruction; the common sense of the godly preserves them.” ~~King Solomon

The most difficult thing in life to control is our tongue. What we say makes a difference. With God’s Holy Spirit in us we can be wise. Otherwise we spread destruction everytime we speak.

May we speak the common sense of God and be preserved.

“The loose tongue of the godless spreads destruction; the common sense of the godly preserves them.” ~~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:9)

“If good people barely make it, what’s in store for the bad!” ~~King Solomon

Jesus is straight with us. The way is not easy. He says it over and over. Unfortunately, many in the church want us believe otherwise. Solomon knew otherwise as well.

We need to vigilant. We need to follow the narrow way. We need to take up the way of sacrifice. We need to leave everything behind for Jesus, our Messiah.

“If good people barely make it, what’s in store for the bad!” ~~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:31)

“The integrity of the honest keeps them on track; the deviousness of crooks brings them to ruin..” ~~King Solomon

God’s way is the way of integrity. It is core to who He is and it is core to who He wants us to be. The question we ask ourselves is “What does God want me to do?” The answer is the answer of integrity. Anything else leads to our ruin.

“The integrity of the honest keeps them on track; the deviousness of crooks brings them to ruin..” ~~King Solomon (Proverbs 11:3)

Start with God

God offered Solomon anything he wanted. All he asked for was wisdom. God gave it to him. Here is his suggestion so I think I should pay attention to it. Simple advise.

Start with God.

That’s it.

Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing down to God; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning. Proverbs 1:7

I should pause

Easier said than done some days. Someone says something and off I go. I react. I speak. I regret it.

God’s wisdom teaches me to pause. I should forgive what they say. I should forget what they say.

His wisdom teaches me to pause.

Smart people know how to hold their tongue; their grandeur is to forgive and forget. Proverbs 19:11

Smart people know how to hold their tongue

Man, this is tough. Now Solomon was an amazingly wise man. So this is good advice. Here are three steps. It is interesting in that Solomon links not reacting with forgiving and forgeting. It is much easier to not react if it is the “first time” someone says something we don’t like. Forgeting makes that happen.

1. Don’t react and say it.
2. Forgive.
3. Forget

“Smart people know how to hold their tongue; their grandeur is to forgive and forget.” ~Solomon (Proverbs 11)

May I hold my tongue. Really Lord. Help me. Make me smart. Amen.

My own understanding

I think I am pretty clever some days. I think I can figure it all out. AND then I run into the wall with something and I realize I am not as clever as I like to think I am. My understanding is not what our LORD wants.

If the victory is to be His, I have to trust Him with all my heart. I have to emotionally connect with what He wants not what I understand. May I trust him from the bottom of my heart. May I do it now. What is He saying?

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! (Prov. 3:5 The Message Bible)

Matters of the heart

November 29, 2010 Leave a comment

There are matters of the heart and there are matters of faith. There are many things in my heart that I want to do. They are based on what I want many times. There is a better way.

When we start with faith, the Lord brings to the matters of the heart to His good conclusion. He cares that good comes from our plans. Supernatural courage comes from Him to step out with pure motives.

May I commit to the Lord everything I do. May He establish my plans.

To human beings belong the plans of the heart, but from the LORD comes the proper answer of the tongue. People may think all their ways are pure, but motives are weighed by the LORD. Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. Proverbs 16:1-3 TNIV

How do we become wise?

November 5, 2010 Leave a comment

How do we become wise? As we follow God, seek His ways, listen to Him, we need to store it up. It seems so easy with technology, blogging, twittering, and facebooking to just throw stuff out there. It comes our way and off it goes. No storing up and just a fountain of quick, random thoughts.

God’s way is build and layer on top of truth. When we store up knowledge of His ways, we become wise.

May I store up knowledge and be wise in His ways.

Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. Proverbs 10:14
