Can you rest?

God has a goal for us. In His new plan, we can rest from our work and do His. We need to be careful though. We have received the same promises as those who have gone before us. The promise is not new. We have a choice to make. Jesus challenges us to choose well.

If we have supernatural courage, we can enter His rest. We have to believe. We have to keep our eyes on Him. He led the way.

Are you ready for some rest?

January 27, 2013 Leave a comment

So here is a promise that is considered current and available to all of us. It is something I can have today.

God is at rest. We can be to. We have to keep at it every day. Jesus said pray “Give us this day”. All Jesus did was do what He saw His Father doing. He was obedient. And His Father is at rest. We can be too. It is a question of obedience.

And so this is still a live promise. It wasn’t canceled at the time of Joshua; otherwise, God wouldn’t keep renewing the appointment for “today.” The promise of “arrival” and “rest” is still there for God’s people. God himself is at rest. And at the end of the journey we’ll surely rest with God. So let’s keep at it and eventually arrive at the place of rest, not drop out through some sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4:8-11

Can I rest today?

We have the promise. It has not been fulfilled yet. We can receive it today even though in the past it has gone unfulfilled. We can obey. We can rest. Today is the day. Now is the time. God is faithful. If we let Him take over, we can rest. Our place of rest comes in our obedience to God and what He wants to have happen today. He has a plan.

May I listen and obey. That is my part.

God made that vow, even though he’d finished his part before the foundation of the world. Somewhere it’s written, “God rested the seventh day, having completed his work,” but in this other text he says, “They’ll never be able to sit down and rest.” So this promise has not yet been fulfilled. Those earlier ones never did get to the place of rest because they were disobedient. God keeps renewing the promise and setting the date as today, just as he did in David’s psalm, centuries later than the original invitation: Today, please listen, don’t turn a deaf ear . . . Hebrews 4:3-7

Can I rest?

REST...i haz it

REST…i haz it (Photo credit: carrierdetect)

Life is restful in Jesus!! In Him is real rest not temporary relief.

I can just take it easy when I am a partner with Him. He has won the victory. He has defeated death. He is sitting right next to His Father with everything taken care of and in order. Or I can try to work hard and do it my way.

So he beckons me with that wonderful smile on His face. He say, “Hey Mike, come over here. Sit down with me. Why don’t you quit working so hard?  Why are you so worried? I will give you rest. Just sit here with me. How does that sound?”

It sounds wonderful!! Thank you so VERY much!!

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

The promise of rest if we believe. Don’t exasperate God!

Relax, God is in control. I keep hearing that from our Father. He promised a rest. That is His goal for us. This rest requires that we have faith in Him.

If we believe that nothing is impossible for God, that he loves us and has a great plan for us, we can be “at rest”. His peace isn’t easily understood but it is real. His rest is like no other.

There is only one requirement. We must believe.

For as long, then, as that promise of resting in him pulls us on to God’s goal for us, we need to be careful that we’re not disqualified. We received the same promises as those people in the wilderness, but the promises didn’t do them a bit of good because they didn’t receive the promises with faith. If we believe, though, we’ll experience that state of resting. But not if we don’t have faith. Remember that God said, Exasperated, I vowed, “They’ll never get where they’re going, never be able to sit down and rest.” Hebrews 4:1-3

What does He want us to know?

September 9, 2011 Leave a comment

There are some things that really please our Father. One of them is to reveal things to those of us who will believe just like little children do. And so, what does He want us to know?

  • He will give us rest.
  • Serve Him and we will learn.
  • His way is easy, not difficult.

At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. ‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’ Matthew 11:25-30

We can rest, fearless before the enemy

In God, we have rest. Even though we know we are at war, we rest, confident that God will see us through. Perfect love brings us peace. The is no fear in His world. He is in charge and we can rest.

What a gift from our Father. His goal for us will be achieved. Our enemy can’t touch us when we trust in Him.

So … I go to bed confident. I wake up rested and strong. I wake up fearless.

“I stretch myself out. I sleep. Then I’m up again—rested, tall and steady, fearless before the enemy mobs coming at me from all sides.” ~~King David (Psalm 3:5-6)

Bold confidence

November 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Whose way do I want to follow? Mine? God’s? It is a fundamental question. It needs to be asked and it needs to be answered. It is foundational to God’s world and His government.

I need a bold confidence. I want a firm grip on it. I don’t want to turn a deaf ear. I really, really don’t. Where will that get me? Not where He wants me to go.

I want His rest. I want to reach the end point. I want to sit down and rest. I want to cease from my own “doing” and enter His “doing”.

May I keep a firm grip on His bold confidence!!

Now, if we can only keep a firm grip on this bold confidence, we’re the house! That’s why the Holy Spirit says, Today, please listen; don’t turn a deaf ear as in “the bitter uprising,” that time of wilderness testing! Even though they watched me at work for forty years, your ancestors refused to let me do it my way; over and over they tried my patience. And I was provoked, oh, so provoked! I said, “They’ll never keep their minds on God; they refuse to walk down my road.” Exasperated, I vowed, “They’ll never get where they’re going, never be able to sit down and rest.” Hebrews 3:6-11
